LOCO, a Malayalam Short Film Guess who's on the cast of this short film written and directed by Mohammed Shahid!! Watch the teaser to find out the celebrity of our English Department😎. The day started off with seminars and drawing out lesson plans for microteaching. But something else made the day bright...yummy tender pickled mangoes(kannimanga) brought with love by one of my friends.  We also had a visit by an Inspection team to our Department and one of us was asked to demonstrate to them the latest activity that we began with our Principal's initiative- the Phonetics Open Lab

The Hidden Curriculum The day began with a new innovative language speaking programme. We inaugurated our Phonetics Open lab today. From now on students from other departments can come and learn to pronounce English words in the British-English accent. This is really helpful for the students in becoming fluent in English.  Today in our philosophy class, our teacher while teaching came upon the subject of adolescent and asked whether we fell into the category? Our answers were ambiguous, while some hands were put up to say that we had passed  adolescent stage. Everyone agreed since people in the age group of 12-19 were considered to be adolescents.  But that cannot be applied to Indians. For us adolescent stage is till almost 30 years of age. Because even if we pass our 20's, we don't have the necessary financial or social privileges. We depend on our parents and so until we become socially independent we are similar to adolescents and not adults.  Earlier perc

How Does a Bat Give Birth?😰 The class went still with this question. It was clear that no one knew the answer  but our psychology teacher  decided to test the waters before revealing the correct answer.  What followed was lots of laughter. It was a session of bat jokes. Finally our teacher showed us mercy and gave the true facts.  The real reason behind asking such a question was to understand competence that a teacher should have. The teacher should be aware of not just his/her subject but of other areas as well. In the next session Maya ma'am taught us Naturalism and its features. Relating to this is a quote by the eminent poet Rabindranath Tagore, " From the solemn gloom of the temple, children run out to sit in the dust, God watches them play and forgets the priest. ”    Where idealism focuses on spirituality, naturalism emphasizes nature as the ultimate reality.  According to Naturalism, n ature is considered to be the best educator. The day concluded with o

Parvathy and Shiva   We have seen so many artistic representations of Shiva and Parvathy, mainly the Ardhanaarishvara roopa. In all these paintings we see good looking well rounded pink faces of the deities.  The question is are these representations doing justice to the truth that is Shiva and Parvathy. When did appearance(good looks) take the centre stage??? Parental conflicts, extra-marital involvements, indifference to appearance, constantly in the company of ganas - which is their matrimony- is not that alienable to common people and a true nightmare for women of today... And Gibi ma'am, our psychology teacher opines that this is the true picture of matrimony.   Let me point out that these notions are irrelevant. For one Shiva is more than a husband, he has taken many forms even that of a beggar wandering around begging for alms for his sins. In these forms he is more than a homely husband. A woman's duty is not to consta

The Fish Tail            Guess what I saw at lunch today...a big tank filled with water and inside I caught a flash of movement of a tail swimming away from the surface into the deep waters. Everyone was curious to get a glimpse of the additional tenant at MTTC. I also went and stretched my neck to see the fellow. He never gave me a chance to click his photo..so fishy!!     For today session our teacher taught us the importance of helping others- get to know them and think what we can do to help with their difficulties if they have any. We moved away from our respective departments and mixed with other department students. It was a nice experience because we found out interesting things about each other. Then together we listened to our class about the different schools of philosophy.      PIC OF THE DAY  We didn't even bother to change seats when the next session began. In that class we learned another important thing. Wh

Stop Being the Angel for Once!!        From a young age itself we liked to be called as angels. Then Virginia Woolf, writer and intellectual, opened up another interpretation which was like a slap on the face, a wake-up call for women all over the world. Woolf describes in her 1931 speech on the employment of women, about how she battled out the 'angel' in the house- the angel who turned to be a major hindrance for her creativity, for her expression, for her will to change the social structures. Angels represent everything pure, beautiful, sacrificial, refined, white...and Woolf  for one decides to quit and be herself.  Whenever we are faced with a situation our minds cloud with insecurities. The big question that remains is what will others think? Watch your mouth, move in a graceful manner , blush more... Do these phrases dictate and decide a persons acceptability? Do we have the mind to extinguish that overtly pure, innocent being  ingrained in

Life is complicated but knowing how to drape a saree is even more. Today was interesting , with lots of teaching and learning going on. Induction programme looms in my future, talent hunt practice nowhere done, assignments and seminars backing it up......wow its going to be hectic. We have some good basket ball players in our year.  Joju sir's panel discussion on Benefits of Technology is going on and I am presenting for my group. Eat, pray,Live......

Joby Kondoor. From the moment he took over the class from Dr.Gibi ma'am and Dr.Joju sir we were in a cloud of bewilderment caused by our own ignorance. The class mainly was about completing tasks- tasks that showed insight on skills that a teacher should develop - respect, understanding, cooperation, responsibility and a caring nature . The first task was sitting in a semicircle of two rows within ten seconds. It took us more than three tries to completely understand and form the way Joby sir wanted from us and that too we managed after he showed us how its done.  Following this task he introduced us to the game of forming groups based on imagining the wheels of a part
