MUDDYING THE DISCOUSE OF GENDER ROLES
'The problem with Gender is that it prescribes how we should be. Rather than recognizing how we are.'
- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Today was indeed a special day. We had twin surprise anniversaries- Ancy teacher and our dear Uthara chechi was celebrating their wedding anniversaries. We all blew a wish to the dear souls and started with Ancy ma'am's session. Ma'am took a class on Indian thinker- Sri Aurobindo Ghosh.
The next session was optional hour. It was the turn for Uthara to do the reading and reflection. She took the book 'One Part Woman' a translated work originally written by Perumal Murugan.
Set in the 1940's, the story is about a couple, Ponna, a doting submissive woman and Kali, her husband. Being infertile and unable to conceive they are ostracized by the society. After so many failed attempts they are advised to participate in a temple festival where people have the freedom to find a partner- all men are considered as gods and women wishing to have children have the freedom to choose any man of their choice to sleep with. The climax is the repercussions that the couple face after the festival is over.
The book is a must read. The book emphasizes on caste, tradition and patriarchy that stand as barriers to freedom and opportunity.
